Pikalyovo is a small town in the Russian hinterlands. In summer of 2009 the whole country took notice of it. The town's main enterprise was closed because of a dispute among its owners. The town's residents were left without any livelihood, and in desperation they occupied the town's administrative headquarters and blocked a main highway. Television newscasts reported on the situation live as President Putin intervened personally to settle the matter. The whole country followed these events, but many interesting things escaped notice. For example, very few knew that the town owed its survival to just one woman.
Three Sides was shot two years after the events. Those directly involved in the events tell what led up to the social disruptions, how the situation unfolded, and even more significantly what happened after the uproar died down.
This is an investigative film about the "villains" who nearly destroyed the town and the heroes who saved it. It shows ordinary people and government functionaries.
